The three castles of Eguisheim

The route of the five castles begin with the ruins of the three castles of Eguisheim. Three castles of the eleventh and thirteenth century sit at Husseren-les-Châteaux, they were one at the time and are abandoned to nature and their three dungeons. Despite the ruins, this place gives the opportunity to have a nice view of the plain of Eguisheim.

The castle of the Counts of Eguisheim

Count Eberhard built around 720 a castle where the count's family lived until 1225, when the line died out. The fortress is the heart of Eguisheim because it is around this one that the village was built. The rooms, dating back to the 10th century, are located on the ground floor and served as a residence for Count Hugo IV of Eguisheim and his wife. Nowadays, the castle belongs to the municipality, used for exhibitions as well as some events and receptions.

Castle of Hohlandsbourg

The castle is located on the route of five castles and 620 meters above sea level. It is thanks to its view that many medieval events are organized. It was built in 1279 by the Provost of Colmar and modernized by the Counts of Lupfen in the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1563, it was adapted for the defense by Lazare de Schwendi and subsequently, it was restored in the 1990s. Hohlandsbourg Castle has been listed as a historical monument since 1840.

The castle of Hagueneck

The Hagueneck Castle is 420m high and belonged to Buckhard de Hagueneck. It is built in the 13th century and spreads on three levels on a rectangular plane, its main function was not a military fortress but rather a residence. Its small size and geographical location: placed at the bottom of a valley far from the traffic proves that its function was not military. The castle is sold as a national good and is classified "Historical Monument" since January 29, 1923.

The castle of Pflixbourg

The castle of Pflixbourg is located on the route of the five castles and is built for the first time in 1220. This military fortress is 425 meters high and served as garrison castle between the plain and the valley of the Fecht. The first owner was Conrad Werner from Hattstatt and changed owners several times until the 15th century when he was destroyed and abandoned. The castle has a polygonal shape where you can find a dungeon, a cistern, housing and common It is registered in the register of historical monuments in 1968.
